Abortion kills humans, plain and simple. Many use deflection in order to justify their support of abortion; they will talk about any topic perhaps related but not directly involving abortion, such as rape and poverty.
One such deflection is comparing abortion to self-defense and war, claiming it’s okay to kill humans in some situations, so it should be acceptable to kill humans through abortion. The problem with this is that there are strict, heavily scrutinized laws governing war and self-defense.
In war, people can’t just kill others without prejudice. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, “the main purpose of international humanitarian law (IHL) is to maintain some humanity in armed conflicts, saving lives and reducing suffering. To do that, IHL regulates how wars are fought, balancing two aspects: weakening the enemy and limiting suffering.”
Those who don’t abide by laws of war are investigated and tried for war crimes, and most receive lengthy prison sentences or execution. Whereas there are statute of limitations on several crimes, there are no statute of limitations on war crimes. Over 450 people have been convicted of war crimes and sentenced.
Self-defense is a controversial subject, especially regarding gun ownership and use. One can’t just kill a person and claim self-defense. Many who kill in self-defense are often charged with manslaughter or homicide in varying degrees and a judge or jury determines guilt or innocence. There are several degrees of varying laws and regulations in different states that can help prove guilt or innocence, such as “duty to retreat”, “reasonable force”, and “imperfect self-defense”. Grand juries heavily scrutinize the evidence and decide on a verdict. This is a very meticulous process.
Several abortion supporters are calling for unrestricted, unregulated access to abortion. I’m not going to make the case for restricted and regulated abortion, as I believe it should be abolished entirely. I’m merely drawing the contrast between the heavily regulated and restricted circumstances a person is able to legally kill another person in war and in self-defense, verses the call for the unrestricted, unregulated indiscriminate killing of the youngest, innocent, defenseless humans through abortion. This is not only heinous, evil, and abhorrent. It’s absolutely insane.
